The Honors College at LSC-Kingwood - Link

Is your GPA 3.25 or above?  Would you like to be part of the honor's college?  Just email one of your teachers, and ask them to fill out the faculty nomination form.

Honors students benefit from small, interactive classes, personalized advising, research opportunities and internships, scholarships, and enrichment offerings (such as Honors College Student Organization, field trips, conferences, and seminars).

 End of Semester Bash!

Thursday May 5th, 12:30-1:20

We'll order pizza - let us know what you would like to do to unwind before finals!  We can watch math and engineering youtubes, have a raffle for door prizes, and have everyone contribute to a "lesson learned" book / Open Mic - advice from students to students - write down advice, and read the advice of students!  Did you sign up for too many classes?  Did you finally start using the tutoring center?  Did you find a neat resource that you wish you knew about earlier?  This is your chance to pass down your words of wisdom - preach it from the mic, or write it for the blog, your choice.

Hope everyone is surviving the semester!!!

This talk illustrates capabilities in Mathematica 10 and other Wolfram technologies that are directly applicable for use in teaching and research on campus. Topics of these technical talks include:

·         Enter calculations in everyday English, or using the flexible Wolfram Language

·         Visualize data, functions, surfaces, and more in 2D or 3D

·         Store and share documents locally or in the Wolfram Cloud

·         Use the Predictive Interface to get suggestions for the next useful calculation or function options

·         Access trillions of bits of on-demand data

·         Use semantic import to enrich your data using Wolfram curated data

·         Easily turn static examples into mouse-driven, dynamic applications

·         Access 10,000 free course-ready applications

·         Utilize the Wolfram Language's wide scope of built-in functions, or create your own

·         Get deep support for specialized areas including machine learning, time series, image processing, parallelization, and control systems, with no add-ons required

If you haven't seen Mathematica lately, you will be surprised to see how suitable Mathematica is for projects and course examples in any STEM, business and economics, or liberal arts field. Attendees with no prior experience report that this talk helps with getting started using Mathematica language and workflow.  With improvements like the new free-form input and expanded areas  like finance, statistics, engineering, software development, and  image processing, even the most advanced users report learning quite a bit from Mathematica technical talks. All attendees will receive an electronic copy of the examples, which can be adapted to individual projects. I’ll also provide a free trial download.

We are contacting you from the Rice Office of STEM Engagement (www.rstem.rice.edu) at Rice University to invite all your science, math, and engineering students from Lone Star College to attend an informational open house on the Rice Campus on Wednesday, February 24^th, 2016 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  At the Open House, they will receive information about participating in the Summer 2016 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Nanotechnology at Rice. This will be an opportunity for students to ask questions regarding the program to our staff and previous REU participants. Food and parking validations will be provided.

We encourage your students to have filled out their application for the REU programhttp://www.rstem.rice.edu/reu prior to attending this informational session, but we will also have staff available to assist them with the application process that day in case it is needed.

Dr. Means holds a Doctorate from Brigham Young University's Business School. He was a Distinguished Professor at Louisiana Tech university. Authored and co-authored four textbooks on business communication. Served as President of the Association for Business Communication for the Southwest Region. Recipient of the Teacher of the Year award from the Association of Women Students. Also served as Faculty Association President at Louisiana Tech. Taught for 25 years at Tech. Served as department head for six years. Besides the business college's basic business communication course, taught specialized communication course for computer information system majors. Married with six children. Served as head of the LDS church's employment center in San Antonio for two years.

Charity Combs is a mathematics Professor at Lone Star Kingwood. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics from Norwich University, a Master’s of Aeronautical Science with Specializations in Safety Systems and Education Technology from Embry-Riddle, and a Master’s of Arts in Mathematics from University of Houston. She has been an adjunct professor at several colleges around the Houston area, including Lone Star Montgomery and San Jacinto College North. She has a private helicopter certificate, loves training and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and is a mother of a headstrong 6 year old.
