Interested in becoming an officer?  Please answer the following questions and email to: Natalie Nobile <NNOBILE@my.lonestar.edu>

Society of Mathematics and Engineering Officer Questionnaire

An officer position in SME requires commitment throughout the academic year.  Keep in mind that a heavy class load (over 15 credits) or work load will make it difficult to participate in SME and maintain your officer duties.

1.        Why do you want to be an SME officer?

2.       What previous experience or skills do you have that would make you a capable officer?

3.       What are your interests within mathematics and engineering?

4.       How doHow do you go about your research, especially in unfamiliar subjects?

5.       How wWhat do you see your role as in a team?

CMS needs Science Olympiad Coaches!
bridge building, wind power, gliders, rockets, rube Goldberg device (mission possible), and much more
The events this year are here:
For anyone interested, you would just adopt an event, and help out 2-4 middle school kids that are competing in that event.   The CMS Sci-Oly teams meet on Thursday from 4:00-5:00 at Creekwood Middle School which is only ~10 minutes from LSC-KW.  CMS is located in the center of KW, just off Lake Houston and Sandy Forks.  If you can't meet on Thurs afternoons, there might be another way to get together with your team - just let me know what event you are interested in, and what times you would be able to meet.

Technical Career Fair:

All,
Nathalie and I are registering LSC - Kingwood for The Student Mathematics League (SML) which is affiliated with AMATYC.  The registration for SML is possible using our AMATYC Institutional Membership login/password (which I have) and is free!!   If any of you might be interested in joining us and the students (that we recruit) in this “league” you would be most welcomed.
I am providing information about the SML below; if you would like to find additional information please visit Student Mathematics League - AMATYC.
The Student Mathematics League was founded in 1970 by Nassau Community College in New York. The League has grown to more than 165 colleges in more than thirty-five states as well as Bermuda involving over eight thousand community college math students.
New registrations are welcome anytime during the testing year. However, to insure receiving materials in time to compete in the first round and to avoid the late fee, we must register online by September 30.  (Registrations must be submitted by faculty members who intend to be the team moderator; no registrations from individual students are allowed.
Important Dates:
Dates for the 2015-2016 Student Mathematics League Math Competition
Round 1:
Friday, October 16 through Saturday, November 7, 2015
Round 2:
Friday, February 12 through Saturday, March 5, 2016
Eligibility - Colleges are eligible to enter a team of five or more students, or individual students if fewer than five students wish to compete, must be a two-year college or college that offer mathematics programs typical of two-year colleges and that do not offer four-year degrees in mathematics, science, or engineering. Any student at such a college who has not earned a two-year college or higher degree or junior standing is eligible to compete (part-time students are eligible).
Test Format - The level of the tests is PreCalculus mathematics. Questions are from a standard syllabus in College Algebra and Trigonometry and may involve PreCalculus, Algebra, Trigonometry, synthetic and analytic Geometry, and Probability.  All questions are short-answer or multiple choice (multiple choice questions will have at least 4 response choices). No partial credit is allowed in scoring.
Awards - To be eligible for an individual award, a participant must compete on both exams. The team score consists of the best five scores on the exam in each round. The individual student team members may change from exam to exam. A team may consist of fewer than five students if necessary, and in this case the team's score is the sum of the scores of the students participating. The grand prize for the qualified individual with the highest total score on the two exams is a $3,000 scholarship to be used to continue his or her education at an accredited four-year institution. The top ten ranking individuals will receive appropriate prizes of a mathematical nature, as will the five highest ranking members of the first place team. The five highest ranking teams, as well as the team and individual champions from each of AMATYC's eight regions, will receive plaques at the following year’s AMATYC annual conference. In addition, certificates of merit will be awarded to the top five individuals from each participating school.
Have a good day.
